Frequently Asked Questions
Questions, concerns or comments about Dachshund Dash? Call 405.528.6000 or email Jill at jbrown@okgazette.com
How does the wagering work?
Anyone may wager on the racing dogs. Pick up a program at the door or inside Oklahoma Gazette to see which ones to pick! You then get a form at the wagering table and make your selection(s). You may choose as many dogs as you like and fill out as many forms as you like. Then you donate $2 per dog you chose and watch the races! If your doggie choices come in first or second place, you win a prize! Take your copy of the form to the prize table to claim your t-shirt or other goodies…
How much money do you raise for charity?
Oklahoma Gazette has raised more than $60,000 for its Dachshund Dash beneficiaries. Free to Live Animal Sanctuary, Pets and People Humane Society, Best Friends of Shelter Pets and Central OK Humane Society have been our selected organizations to date. This year's goal is $10,000!
How do you choose which dogs get to race?
After hundreds of entries come in, Oklahoma Gazette staff put the names into a hopper and we draw them LIVE at an event about a month before the race. Dog owners are encouraged to attend, but do not need to be present to be selected. Those chosen will be notified the next day if they are not at the event.
Are only purebred Dachshunds allowed in the Dash?
Well, we don’t do a background check on each dog’s heritage, but to keep it fair, we do ask that the entries are full-blood Dachshunds and not mixed breeds.
How do I run ads for my dog or my business in the event program?
Call Christy at Oklahoma Gazette: 405.528.6000 or email cduane@okgazette.com. Ads for your dog start at $50 (black and white,) and ads for your business start at $165, which includes full color. The event program publishes inside Oklahoma Gazette the Wednesday before the races.
How much does it cost to attend the races?
It's $1.00 admission for adults and kids of all ages. Premium seating on the floor level is an additional $2 per person. Wagering on the dogs to win prizes is $2 per dog, per race. Parking in the convention center parking garage is $6 per vehicle and they do not allow you to leave and re-enter without paying again.
Can I bring my dog to watch the races?
Yes, for a $1 admission fee per dog, non-agressive dogs on leashes are allowed to come to the Dachshund Dash as spectators, and they don't have to be doxies! Owners are responsible for pet waste cleanup.
How many people come to watch the Dachshund Dash?
In 2010, we had more than 8,000 attendees!
Can I buy a copy of the race video?
To purchase the 2007, 2008 or 2009 video for $10, call 405.528.6000 to pay by phone, and we'll ship it to you. 2010 videos will be available around the end of July.
Do you need volunteers?
YES! We need helpers to take tickets, dress the dogs, and to sell merchandise at this event. E-mail jbrown@okgazette.com if you're interested in helping out.
How do I sponsor or become a partner for this event?
We definitely need sponsors to help offset the cost of the event so we can raise more money for the charity! So if your business is interested in supporting our mission by sponsoring the Dachshund Dash, please call 405.528.6000, or click on the "support" link on this site. Can my organization be the Dachshund Dash beneficiary?
Oklahoma Gazette has recently established a multiple-year partnership with the Central OK Humane Society, so for the time being, we are not accepting any requests from other organizations to be the event beneficiary.
